UF/IFAS Extension Orange County provides education and information to residents and businesses through workshops, publications, and mass media in the areas of family life, youth development, natural resources, horticulture, and agriculture. Current September classes/events are listed below and on its events calendar.

First Time Homebuyer Workshop - ENGLISH 9/6 & 9/13 (Online)

Learn the steps to home ownership and how to obtain an affordable mortgage in this 2-part class offered via Zoom in ENGLISH by a team of UF/IFAS Extension Agents, including Orange County Extension Agent Jenny Rodriguez. The homebuyer workshop meets the education requirements for down payment assistance programs.

Fall Vegetable Gardening (In Person)

Learn how to create a Florida vegetable garden that grows what you want to eat and produces throughout the fall season! Presented by Orange County Extension Agent Calvin Gardner, this class covers the science of how to grow better, healthier plants and ways that you can grow more garden vegetables with less work. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or just getting started, this class will help you on your way to a beautiful and bountiful fall garden.

Crafting Your Florida-Friendly Landscape Webinar (Online)

Learn all about the Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ 9 principles that will help you design a landscape that fits your aesthetic needs, suits your lifestyle, and is environmentally sustainable. Join Orange County Extension Agent Dr. Heather Kalaman to learn more about how your landscape can be designed to look the way you want, be low maintenance, and support the overall well-being of Florida’s natural resources.

Adopt-A-Tree (In Person) 

Join our UF/IFAS Extension Master Gardener Volunteers at Magnolia Park, 2929 S Binion Road, Apopka, FL 32703, for our Adopt-A-Tree event! Open to all Orange County residents with proof of residency such as a driver’s license, utility bill, or photo I.D. Each household is eligible to receive two trees, which must be planted on the resident’s private property only. Trees are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and varieties will vary based on availability, but all will be suitable to flourish in Zone 10A.  

FREE! Saturday, September 14, 2024, 8:00am-12:00pm or until trees are gone, whichever comes first. No pre-registration or fee to participate. 407-254-9200.

Urban Backyard Chicken Class (Online)

Keeping chickens and producing your own eggs in suburban and urban settings has become a popular hobby! Hens in a coop can be a fun and practical addition to your home garden. Learn how to get started and be successful in this program presented via TEAMS by Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough.

 Green Industries Best Management Practices (GI-BMP) (In person)

A science-based educational program for lawn care and landscape maintenance workers. Pre-requisite for the Limited Urban Fertilizer Applicator License. Presented by Orange County Extension Agent Hannah Eason, this class covers proper fertilization, pest control, irrigation, and cultural practices for landscape and pest control professionals. Plus, enjoy a bonus Lunch & Learn on Sun Spot Safety—with SWAG included! CEUs available!

Florida's Hidden Invaders: Tackling Invasive Species Webinar (Online)

Join us to learn about invasive flora and fauna in Florida! In this class, we'll define key terms like native, non-native, and invasive species. You'll discover how these invasive species affect local plant and animal communities and learn to recognize common invasive species in the county and state. We'll also discuss effective strategies to prevent their spread and protect Florida's natural ecosystems.

gARTening Series: Creating a Pumpkin-Shaped Hypertufa Planter (In Person)

Learn how to care for succulents and how to design a hypertufa using a pumpkin-shaped bucket! Love the look of stone, but not the weight and expense? With a little time and a few supplies, you can make your own planters from hypertufa. Join Orange County Extension Agent Clarissa Chairez in our garden to learn how to create a hypertufa and care for succulents! Design a hypertufa for yourself or make one for someone as a gift.
